Donald and his wife, Felicia, (often in matching outfits!) can be found at RCM many times throughout the week– giving back to the community with their time by volunteering at the weekly food pantry, pitching in with the lunch program (Donald loves to cook) and chatting with all who come in the doors.
It’s a scenario that Donald never could have imagined. After selling drugs for many years, starting when he was 18, and multiple stints in and out of jail, he gets emotional when talking about his desire to give back.
That he married Felicia, is an even bigger surprise. Many years ago, when Donald was still dealing, he met Felicia, who was actively working the streets. They lost contact when Donald went to jail. “But… there’s something about God,” says Felicia with a laugh. One day after Donald was released, he got on a bus and saw Felicia there with her Bible and they were reintroduced. It took several more years for Felicia to overcome her addictions, but Donald stayed by her side.
After getting married in 2018, Donald and Felicia would often come to the food pantry for food. The kindness that they experienced from staff at RCM led them to start attending and become members of Roseland Christian Reformed Church.
"On Sundays, we can't wait to get down here," adds Felicia.
The next challenge facing Donald and Felicia is securing permanent supportive housing for Felicia’s twin adult sons, born with special needs.
